I dug it. Watson is more of a brawler if you watch the differences in the fight choreography, while Holmes is a martial artist. If you read the originals, Holmes has a lot of abilities and skills, and among those are martial arts. The slapping you see is a kung fu style. I like that they temper that with the deductive internal monologue, and I just generally liked the Holmes character, it was much truer to the drug-using, egotistic, eccentric, and multitalented Holmes of the novels than anyone else has done.

I saw the movie yesterday and I have to agree, the stories are amazing and the movie did a great job of portraying the essence of Holmes. Robert Downey Jr. did a great job. I never expected him to be a good Holmes, always bringing the same, fast-paced character to the screen... but, wow. I was impressed. The scenes kept you guessing and the slow motion foreshadowing of his next moves always left me wondering if it would work, lol.
Go out and see this film!

The only one I read was The Hound of the Baskervilles, and I don't recall any martial arts in that one but it's been a few years. Maybe I'm too harsh a critic. My friends liked it a lot so maybe it is a good movie, I just couldn't get myself into it.
