Chlorine, Chloramines etc...... Killing your microbes?
    #262118 - 08/09/09 12:06 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

So here it is. I hear chlorine/chloramine in tap water kill microbes, bacteria,etc..... So why would you work with microbes/ beneficial bacteria,etc.... if you dont first de-chlorinate your water? Anybody without a reverse O have any clues. I'm using tetra pond water conditioner(safe for plants and fish). See if i can get better results?

If chlorine kills beneficial microbes shouldn't one de-chlorinate the water before applying it.

Chlorine tends to dissipate (evaporate) from water that is left standing in an open container for 24 hours.

Chlorine can be bad for plants in high doses but is an essetial micro nutrient for plant photosynthesis. So Chlorine is needed for your plants to produce chlorophyll

CHLORINE
Soil Mobility
Chlorine is mobile in the soil.
Plant Uptake
Chlorine is absorbed in the chloride ion form (Cl-).
Functions in the Plant
Effects hydration of plant tissue.
Involved in photochemical reactions in photosynthesis.
Required for growth and sugar synthesis in sugar beets.
Deficiency Symptoms
Severe deficiency shows chlorosis and necrosis of leaf areas.
Wilted leaf tips.
Bronze discoloration.
Natural Supply Source
Soluble salts (particularly sodium chloride

But what about chloramine?  That's in my tap water and my plants are doing fine, but I'm not doing any microbial work.  Chloramine doesn't dissipate from what I've heard, but I still let it sit for a day before use.  Anyone with more info?

I work in a fish store. ITs in Oakland and chloramine(the non evaporating form)or chlorine will kill ANY FISH in 12 - 20 minutes not to mention the essential beneficial bacteria for the nitrogen cycle to even happen. How can something that kills living things be good for medicine or microbes.

idk about fish, but chloramine doesnt dissapate from the water and as long as theirs not a shit ton in the water then your plants will be fine...
