Assistance, por favor
    #177508 - 01/08/09 02:53 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

So,

i've come into a rut.

It seems that i have an issue with my plants and I cannot figure out what it is.

It is a DWC setup.

I have yellowing of fan leaves from bottom to top, and my plant is almost barren of fan leaves now.  I'm 2 weeks into flowering or  so.  They began to have black necrotic splotches, and then simply wilted and turned yellow and crispy as it went up the plant.  New growth is small, and thin.  This specific plants roots have never grown into the solution below, and has always had to be top fed.  Feeder roots are just now showing, it seems to have turned into  a huge root ball or something on the rock wool.  I generally tried feeding, watering, dry. 3 day process, very standard practice.  Training the plant to grow the roots more to get into the solution below by misting from inside the tub directly onto the root.

The plants leaves are all limp, and lifeless.  Dying, and curling inward.  Yellowed, and now has yellow dead spots instead of brown/black.

Today I ran a lot of pH balanced water w/ weak nute solution through the cups w/ H2O2 to clean up any possible salt buildup, and I use GH FloraMicro, TigerBloom & DNF Bloom 0-50-30, pH 5.5 - 6  and 2 air pumps in the nutrient solution....  No funny smells or anything.

My other plant still has its leaves, there are some missing and some damaged, but this seemed to have slowed or stopped  &  its leaves are curling down & inward.  Growth is still okay and stronger stems on new growth compared to the other plant.  This one I think is stressed less than the other, it seems to be expanding and growing where as the other seems to have slowed down.

Can anyone help figure this out?

I hope that this flushing type technique i did provides plenty of oxygen & dissolves some of those salts that could be built up on the rock wool/root ball.

the flushing was a good idea, always is, do you have any pics? black on the leaves as in mold or mildew?

Sounds like a potassium and or phosphorus deficiency probably due to the lack of a good root system.

The question is why aren't your roots growing like they should, I use DWC myself and the roots grow like crazy

Yellowing of leafs nearly always indicates a deficiency in my experience.

Your nute solution is too weak and you are getting a host of deficiencies.  PH wont tell you the strength per se.  You need a tds meter.  Your solution should be at least 1 tsp of solids to one gal of water, even for new plants.

Hmm, so you are in a DWC bucket but you are top feeding?  Also, when you say "feed, water, dry, 3 day practice) do you mean on day 1 you feed, day 2 you water and on day 3 do nothing?  Then the cycle repeats?

I would say, as in many DWC setups, this might be an over watering issue due to not enough DO (dissolved oxygen) in the water.  What is the size of your DWC rez?  What type of/how many air pump and air stones are you using?  What is the temperature of your nute solution?

Also, in my experience, misting the root directly from the underside of the cube would actually PREVENT roots from growing down into the solution (roots grow in search of water).  Plus, this should already be happening automatically to a minimal degree as the bubbles in the rez hit the surface and break, flinging water droplets up wards towards the roots/lid.

Try LOWERING the amount of solution in the rez, creating a bigger gap between the roots and the surface of the solution.  In such a small enclosed space, with air running through the solution, even with seemingly no water splashing on to the roots, the RH (relative humidity) will easily be 100%.  This is all roots need to grow down into the rez, as they will be getting AIR and WATER.
