(pictures!) VERY yellow/lime green new growth
    #158574 - 12/09/08 07:47 AM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Soil Growers:
1. Are you growing from seed or clones?  seed

2. How old are your plants? 8 weeks and 2 days

3. How tall are your plants? about 12 inches tall, but i put another two or three inches of soil around the base so they would have been about 15 inches or so.

4. What size containers are they planted in? currently in 3 gallon pots

5. What is your soil mix? 1 part soil, 2 parts black peat, 1 part bat guano, 1 part worm castings, 2 parts perlite.

6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use? distilled water, when the soil seems dry. (i stick my finger or my hand deep into the soil)

7. What is the pH of your water? no clue (but isn't distilled neutral?)

8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio? just the nutrients that are in the soil (i think this is the source of the problem) right now with our current soil mix i think its something like 10-5-5. the lovely ladies are showing their sex now, which might mean they need more P or K right?

9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything? no

10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? (HPS, MH, fluorescent, halogen, incandescent "plant lights") currently 400 watt MH, going to switch to a 400 watt hps once we go to 12/12

11. How close are your lights to the plants? 27 inches

12. What size is your grow space in square feet? about 4x4x7

13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space?

14. What is the pH of the soil? no clue (maybe another source of the problem?)

15. Have you noticed any insect activity in your grow space? one small fly was buzzing around the room a couple days ago but nothing since then

16. How much experience do you have growing? first grow

so yeah, the ladies have been in their new soil and pots for about 3 weeks, at first growth slowed down and i think i may have underwatered them a bit. after about a week they EXPLOADED with new growth and they've been looking wonderful since then. a couple days ago white pistils started appearing on 3 of the 4 plants which is very exciting. since about 3 days ago or so the new growth on 3 of the plants is VERY lime green / yellow.

any ideas?

Sounds like a nitrogen deficiency. Are the affected leaves completely yellow or are the veins still green?
It is also possible that the pH is causing a nutrient lock out. You may want to get a pH test kit to rule that out. If the pH is between 5.8-7 then I doubt it would be a nutrient lock out.
If the pH is correct then you may want to try making a guano tea. Pictures?

Nitrogen deficiency wouldn't show up in the new leaves first, it is a mobile nutrient.

I have a couple questions before I hazard a guess. First you NEED to check your Ph; 75% of problems, in my experience stem from Ph issues. What are the temperatures like inside your growing area? Is the yellowing more pronounced near the leaf tips or towards the petioles (where the leaf meets the stem)? Are the leaves contorted or growing strangely? Are there any necrotic (dead) patches? Are the leaves especially thin?

I would probably guess iron deficiency but without pictures its really hard to tell.

haha you seem to know whats up penguin

i have a really good book by soma, and cervantes medical horticulture book and a greg green book and based on what they all say (in relation to the apearance of our ladies) is that it could be --

temp of soil, iron deficiency, ph problems.

whats the safest way to get pictures from your camera to a message board?

word, thanks for all the help.

we have a set of locally made nutes.. one of them being organic acids to stabilize pH, so we're trying that out in a very light amount first.

so we started 12/12 last night for two reasons .. we're running out of space and the preflowers look like they're about to explode.

i'm still worried about the yellowing. the new growth is still very yellow/lime green.

since the last time i posted, the "new growth" has gotten to be the size of my palm and the yellowing has definitely gone away a good amount. i'll try and get pictures up today.

we fed them some organic acids that are supposed to "increase pH stability" and it seemed to have worked a bit i guess. if the new growth is still looking really yellow do you think we should try a pH down solution or wait another week before deciding?

You should irrigate with plain water and test the Ph of the runoff. If the Ph is within the range of 6.5-7, you would treat them with a fertalizer that contains micro-nutrients.

pictures -

to get an idea of the color

in this second picture check out the next biggest leaves from the top.. those used to look exactly like the new growth so maybe the problem is getting better?

the new growth is still really yellow. it gets green and looks more like the rest of the leaves as it gets older, but should we be worried about the fact that the new growth is looking pale still? will this slow bud production, etc?
