the scoop with poop?
    #122593 - 09/15/08 12:40 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

is there a general rule of what kind of poops ok, and what is not?

i am guessing just vegetarian and insect eaters would be best, right?  ie not meat eaters like cats and such.

could i use snail poop?

bird, bat, cow/horse, worm etc are all used readily in horticulture....what about others?  you would not believe how much snail poo i can gather in an afternoon!

rabbit, sheep and pig manures are also good. i have no idea about snail manure but it might be like other herbivores or worms.

I dont think snail poop would hurt too much, its probably a good source of nitrogen if you get enough.

Pig poo is ok?????  my wifes parents own a large pig farm......hmmmmm but it smells HORRIBLE!

Wouldn't pig poop have a lot of ammonia in it? I don't really know, but its an impression I had, and you'd have to be careful if that is the case, because they usually don't care for so much nitrogen in that form.

all manure should probably be composted first and not used for more than 10-15% of the soil mixture.

if not composted pig manure will have way too much Nitrogen(same with horse) I believe I think the only one that you can use not composted is rabbit manure(unless you consider earthworm poo manure) maybe cow in small amounts. Do any of you guys use chicken poop I got some dried packaged stuff?

i used rabbit poo for my experimental grow, but it started stinking up the entire room so i moved it outside and paid no attention to it; but the plant seemed to enjoy it!

chicken, bat, "seagull" or other "bird" for that matter generally has the goods as a standard item in each hydroponics store or garden center... Your plants will love you for bat guano during vegetation & the bird poo which is higher in P., than N & slightly higher levels of K.

You can even find bat guano that is aged, aged bat guano breaks down leaving a moderate amt of N but with high amts of P & standard sized amt of K.

I would think using farm animal poo (pigs, horse, cow) may harbor more bacteria then wanted.  Good for shroomies, but would it be healthy for the root system? would think after a while garden may suffer parasites or something.

I don't know anything about this, but I have read about people sterilizing their soil, so I would imagine that doing so would counter it harboring bacteria.

T0ad, since you have a working knowledge of shroomies, it may be useful to know that in when gardeners make reference to sterilizing soil they don't mean it in the same way that we interpret it in mycology...the process is more like pasteurization rather than sterilization.
Even with sterilized poo, I wouldn't recommend using more than 15% by volume in your soil mix.

right, solarizing the soil where you put the soil in a plastic bag tied? leave it outside on a nice sunny day isn't that how it's done? I know that helps to kill any kind of pests in it

I found out pig manure should not be used composted or not because of potential parasites.

i've decided to do a side by side experiment....what kind of poop do you guys think would be worthy candidates?

i have easy access to chicken, pig, dog (dog poo is great for fertilizing btw), worm, snail fish.  no cows here.

any thoughts?  i am going to gather some up and sun bake it and sterilize it and post a comparison with clones in coco.  be neat to see what does what and lacks what.

are you going to benchmark vegetative growth?

I never knew dog poo was great for fertilizing, I'd think it would be a lot like human poo so I'd never consider it as a fertilizer cantidate.

yes same with pig parasites could be in both. Have no idea about snail, but that's a cool experiment if you got enough.
