Light stress?
    #388734 - 03/23/10 01:08 PM (14 years, 8 days ago)

I'm a bit stumped here.

I've got some plants vegging now that are showing classic signs of overfeeding, but I can promise they aren't overfed. I've been giving them straight water, 1/2 strength nutes, everything I can think and they're still kinda droopy.

I looked back over my grow log and realized that the drooping started almost exactly when I turned on my second 600W light... The temps in my closet aren't any higher than 80 at any point so I doubt it's a heat issue, but is there such a thing as just too much light for a vegging plant? I'm trying to get this all sorted out so I can start flowering next week, but I REALLY want to flower with 1200W instead of just 600W, so getting this problem solved would be really great.

Example;

February 7th, one light running

March 10th, about 3 days after I turned on the second light

Today;

Any ideas?

Well yeah if they look like that after 3 days than I can almost assure you that they are just hardening off, like when I move my vegging plants outdoors into the sun.  Usually my leaves taco though too, so look for that, but it usually takes my plants a good week before they really adapt and explode with growth.  Don't panic just give them a few days, I bet they will look better than ever in a week.  :wink:

Oh yeah, after taking a better look I DO see some tacoing going on.  I'd bank on light stress for sure.  You should take a picture with the HPS off and with the flash so that I can get a better look at the situation.

So what do you think is the solution? keep feeding as normal and just hope they recover? Should I raise the lights a little?  I feel that if it keeps getting worse they're going to be injured beyond repair

How far away do you have the lights now?  Do you have sealed/cooled reflectors?

I'd put them probably 20-24" away for the first few days then move it a few inches each day until you get to your desired height.

I have sealed reflectors with about 400cfm of air being drawn through them. I'd guess they're about 18 inches away right now.... maybe I'll raise them by about 6-8" tonight just to see if that helps.

also, I just cut the lights back from 20/4 to 18/6 in the hopes that the extended dark period will allow them some time to cope with the hardcore lighting situation.

well after a 6 hour dark period (the first time I've ever done that btw) there's barely any noticeable droop on my plants. I'm assuming this means that they were just having a hard time adjusting to the strength of the lights. I'm going to venture a guess that they'll be droopy tomorrow after 18 hours of light but in the next couple days they'll adjust and all will be well.

They should perk up more when they get usto it, I have the same problem whenever moving from veg to flower. Hardening off over a length of time can help avoid this effect but its not top priority. They should be fine in a week or two.

With to 600 you should get a nice bumber with them, they look good good job.:stoned:

Yep definitely textbook light stress.

Don't sweat it bro, like I said, just wait a few more days, and they will take off on you :wink:

I'd think about switching over to 12/12 a few days after they get "climatized", so in 7-10 days.  You are going to have a big pull this time. :vaped:

I'm getting anxious.  I think my plants might be 10 weekers.  1 or 2 of the apical tips still have lots of brand new calyxs.  No dead pistils.

A couple of the 5, Including the TroubleMaker (Hindu x Master Kush) will be done in less than 2 weeks.  Preliminary smoke/potency analysis pending...

yep, I'm thinking about switching very soon :thumbup:

My local hydro store is having their annual spring 15% off sale this friday so I'm going to go buy bloom nutes (I'm completely out) and then it's flower time.

You should stop in my nutrient showdown thread and give me your opinion on that :boobs:

The old growth on those plants is REALLY dark green, are you sure there isn't too much nitrogen in your mix?
