COUNCIL BLUFFS (KPTM) — A board of Iowa pharmacists backs the use of marijuana for medical purposes.
In a unanimous vote Wednesday, the group called on Iowa legislators to reclassify marijuana as a schedule two drug. Such drugs have the potential for abuse but also have accepted medical uses.
The board also recommended the state set up a broad task force including patients, medical professionals, and law enforcement to come up with a safe way to implement a medical marijuana program.
The decision came after a series of hearings and months of discussion over the drug's risks and benefits and pushes legal medical marijuana one step closer to reality in the state. "A lot of people in my family take bipolar medication. I don't and I think one reason why I don't have to take bipolar medication is because of marijuana," said Joe Baker.
Supporters of the idea believe smoking pot can be a safe alternative for patients in search of comfort. "I believe that it's better than alcohol, if they can legalize alcohol and pain pills, you know people are dying off of pain pills and overdosing and I think marijuana would be more proper than that," said Amber Jelen............(read more)

I am glad we are actually starting to focus on the scheduling issue. its a fucking travesty that we keep MJ on the same list as heroin when time and time again it has been proven to have medical benefits and no dangerous side effects.
