Looking for Suggestions on retaining more water in dry climate.
    #359958 - 02/08/10 12:50 PM (1 month, 2 hours ago)

So I am going to try a new location to my gurilla grow that has no water that is acessable and the location consists of:

A steep cliff with sandy soil and is very difficult to vist.

So usually if water is an issue I use lots of vermeculite in the Natural soil or to my own soil mix and then cover the base of my plants with straw or Peat moss to prevent water evaporation.

What else can I do to make the soil hold more water?  What do you do?

Could this work -Got an idea to dig out a ditch like 3 feet deep and 6 feet long and put a layer of plastic down (with small holes in it) and then cover it with some soil and then plant.??????

mulch on top of the soil to retain moisture beneath the soil is great for just that. You already mentioned Vermiculite but you may also want to try peat moss, another great water retainer.

Oh, and there is also Soil Moist, I believe it is called, they are polymer crystal that retain moisture in the soil until needed.

Hope this helps.

yep I was going to suggest the crystals too. they start like the size of rice and when they get soaked in water they expand to about ice-cube sized jello feeling weird things. My mom always used them on trees around our house but they seem to work pretty well

Bury a layer of oyster shells cup side up to hold moisture in the sandy soil. Local technique.
