And the journey begins...
    #357094 - 02/03/10 02:26 AM (5 months, 23 days ago)

Hello Growery!
Well, I've recently discovered my green thumb! I started over at the Shoomery with multiple mushroom batches, and now I've decided to grow my own smoke too!
I've been saving these three seeds that I got from some premium kush. Out of a whole QP there were only 3!
Anyway, I just planted them today...
I'll be posting pictures from start-to-finish!

Decent size flower pots in the closet, grow medium is some soil I requisitioned from other flower pots, and believe it or not, I'm using X-mas lights. I've got them strung up in the closet in such a way...

I'll be posting pics soon, ya'll can tell me what you think! Thanks for the support!

I've been on the shroomery since 2002  Recently moved over myself as well...

But let me tell you: What is good for shrooms is not necessarily good for the greens...light spectrum is different etc...

Those lights are useless, even as secondary lighting, even to grow seedlings. Do a search for CFL, you can get a functional veg setup for $10. There is a certain amount of required reading to grow cannabis indoors, if you don't study up on the basics like lighting you're not going to get anywhere.

I would say looking at the size of the room there you should aim for maybe 4 or 5 CFL's of 40-65w each (actual wattage not equivalent)

I didn't see how many plants you plant to grow but I read somewhere 27w for each plant was bare minimum and my CFL box has 178w for one plant.

Don't dispare though one CFL will be fine for a group of seedlings then as they grow you can just buy and add lights as needed you shouldn't need to go spend a bunch of money all at once.

Also incase you don't know you want the 6500k(blue) spectrum bulb for vegging (24 or 18 hour light cycle) and 2700k(red) bulbs for flowering. If you want to keep it low budget buy a mix of red and blue and use more red for flowering. the plants just like the red better in flowering it's like a late summer sunset.

hello magichombre,
yes shrooms need little to no light to really fruit!
I have a 45 watt cool white bulb in a huge light shade, (since i quit growing shrooms after my 15lb bag of hpoo and straw was cantamed) i just used the incubator as one for starting seedlings as they need high Rh and a temp around the same to get going.
Ive been using the 45 watter for 4 plants and until they get bigger you don't really need anything more, just make sure its close enough as the cool white makes it hard to burn the plants!
as for budding you really need something special like a 400 watt hps or an led grow light(such as the ufo) one with high output leds, which wont raise the power bill much and not produce heat like the hps will.
you can check out my grow log to see teh results of the cfl to start them and then the led to veg and fruit.

id hate to see a good kush strain not do its best, PM me if you need any pointers I'm kinda a noob but have been doing it for like 3 or 4 years now outside.

hope you get a good female!

If you can add more cfl's do it.  Id recommend a shop light and a couple of cool white t12's actually.  It'll cost you up to $20 but it will also ensure that you are lighting the entire length of that box.  I wouldn't recommend them for flowering though.  Do you know what kind of soil you have?  I saw you say you got it from other flower pots but no brand or anything.  The journey of discovering your green thumb has begun.  I would suggest you read jorge cervantez's marijuana horticulture book asap.  That will give you a good understanding of the process from the planning stage through enjoying your final product and long term storage of your harvest.  Good luck and welcome to the Growery!

oh you've got quite awhile to go until you'll know the gender my friend. about a month from now or so unless you start flowering early.

see how it's all drooped to the side? that means that it's too tall for how strong it is. 2 recommendations I'd make here; Get some more lights so it doesn't want to grow quite as tall (it will stretch to get closer to the "sun" if there isn't enough light), and add a small fan in there so that the stem gets a little stronger. just like working out muscles, if it's moving around a little it'll get stronger

yea mine sometimes did that to i found putting the light pretty close to it works than i bend em and kinda supercrop it in a way after it starts getting bigger, but you have to be very careful about doing this and i mean VERY careful cause ive had many that have died from doing this.

your using cfls right? you can basically put em right on the plant and not have to worry about buring the plant but like 2-4inches is what i use as a rule of thumb.

Is that necessary? LST? I read up on it, but can't I just let it grow normally?
I'm a beginner grower so I don't want to kill my plant.

No you definitely don't want to do it..Especially at this point with the shape that plant is in.

But after a grow or two I would consider doing it.

Just get some light good light, give it a light breeze so the stems flutter in the wind just a tad, get some support...I like to use pipe cleaners attached to like a little wooden dowel to stick in the soil.

They can be curled lightly around the stem and push it up to support the leaves and promote a more straight upwards growth...Then when the stem strengthens you can slowly lower the pipe cleaner until its gone and is replaced with something else..

if you have more soil you can add that around it to shorten that up and hold it upright.  add more light as harry said the plant stretches to find light.  the plant tells you want it wants you just have to recognize those signs and respond to the needs accordingly.  it's the dance of sustaining life.

About the LST, you don't have to but most people get better yields doing it. I am finding that it really help maximize the light from CFL's and I will be using LST or a ScroG for the rest of my life it's just like :awesome:

Don't be intimidated to try it at least it's really easy and a good way to spend time with your ladies.

Cultivating Exceptional Cannabis, by DJ Short

Haven't gotten through most of it but it seems like a good place to start so far. Have not read any others either but since FB dropped this link the other day I will pass it on. It's definitely worth the read.

Greg green the cannabis grow bible is a good one, he also does a breeders book which is fairly good. pretty basic stuff to grasp if your into it and wanting to learn!

the plant looks much better!! are you using a fan to help strengthen it up? are you thinking of using ferts on it to? fox farm has a huge selection of great product... you can also use bat Juana aka bat shit(is that right) and stuff like that for organic grows!

It's still vegging, you should be able to tell when the preflowers come, both male and female parts look different to new leaf growth.
It looks like she's being kept alive pretty well for your first grow, it should only be a few weeks until it'll show you what sex it is. Keep up the good work

isn't kush more indica? I'm not sure, i saw pre-flowers at week 4. you can take upto 4-8 weeks to see pre-flowers. its something that takes time and you cant force these things if you have the patients to wait the rewards will be enough to pay you back at the end!
